Addiction is the inability to control a substance or behavior and continuing despite negative consequences. While physical addiction is directed toward a substance, psychological addiction can be directed toward a behavior. Internet addiction is one of the most common problems among psychological addictions today.

Internet addiction can reach serious levels, especially in children and young people. Excessive internet use can lead to social isolation, academic failure, sleep disorders, and physical health problems.

Recommendations for parents:

  • Limit your child's internet usage time
  • Keep computers in shared living areas
  • Set rules for internet use and be consistent
  • Maintain open communication with your child; raise awareness instead of banning
  • Offer alternative social and physical activities
  • Set an example with your own internet usage

Cognitive behavioral therapy is an effective method in treating internet addiction. Family therapy also plays an important role in the treatment process.
