Our Critical Inner Voice
Written byUzm. Dr. Ebru Öztepe Yavaşcı, Psychiatrist·Published: March 13, 2022

We all have a voice inside us that constantly criticizes and judges us. This critical inner voice is shaped by our past experiences and negative messages we receive from our environment. Thoughts like "You're not good enough," "You can't do this," "Everyone is better than you" are products of this inner voice.

The critical inner voice weakens our self-confidence, negatively affects our relationships, and reduces our quality of life. To cope with this voice, we first need to recognize its existence.

Ways to cope with the critical inner voice:

  • Accept that these thoughts are not facts, just thoughts
  • Approach yourself with compassion, as you would speak to a friend
  • Write down negative thoughts and generate realistic alternatives
  • Notice your perfectionist expectations of yourself
  • Don't hesitate to seek professional support when needed

Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the most effective methods for coping with the critical inner voice.
