Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder in which a person feels intense fear and anxiety about certain places or situations. Crowded places, open spaces, public transportation, enclosed spaces, or leaving home alone are among the triggers of agoraphobia.
People with agoraphobia tend to avoid these situations because they fear having a panic attack or being trapped in a situation they cannot escape. Over time, avoidance behavior becomes more widespread and the person's living space gradually narrows. In severe cases, the person may become unable to leave home at all.
Cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure therapy are the most effective methods in treating agoraphobia. Gradual exposure to feared situations plays an important role in breaking avoidance behavior. Medication may also be used when necessary.
